A determination of the temperature of both phases within a particle-laden cloud is obtained from the emission spectrum of such a cloud or flame. This technique, called the spectral comparison method, accounts for the effect of scattering by the particle cloud through measurements of effective particle size and number density used with the Mie theory. The method has been used successfully for the measurement of gas and condensed phase temperatures in small flames, and in the chamber and exhaust plume of small rocket motors.
