Abstract
A series of thrust bearing failures occurred on two large screw compressors on a chemical plant, resulting in serious production losses. In such circumstances those most closely involved are under extreme pressure to restore production and are not necessarily best placed to investigate the underlying causes of the problem. This case study shows the importance of maintaining good plant records and highlights the role of the independent consultant, able to adopt a more systematic approach uninhibited by the myths and prejudices of those more directly concerned.
