Expert systems have been in use in industry for several years and many have gone some way towards providing effective solutions to what would otherwise be tedious manual tasks. This paper describes the development of a medium size personal computer based expert system, currently in use by a major aircraft manufacturer, and explains the various development stages that have enabled it to be successful. The techniques used to develop this expert system are discussed and will prove useful to other knowledge engineers.
