Abstract
Because of several losses of old bulk carriers, ultimate strength assessment of the remaining ageing ships has received considerable attention recently. For ageing ships, two important factors that degrade the ultimate strength of ship hulls are corrosion and fatigue. Paik and Thayamballi [1] have made significant contributions in both aspects by publishing a series of papers related to the subject. This paper provides a comprehensive summary of their work. This discussion is mainly confined to their corrosion models. It is intended to show that further improvements are possible.
