Abstract
Part 1 briefly described the course taken to speed up the Tokaido Shinkansen from 220 km/h to 270 km/h. Part 2 will deal with eight technical issues that were challenged and solved with the designing of the Series 300, 300X, and the Series 700. The details of each of the technologies discussed will be left to papers specializing in each of the fields. As with Part 1, the authors wish to emphasize the concept that the railway is a ‘system’ compiled from the elements.
