Abstract
Abstract
In this paper, the design and the analysis of a mechanical device to achieve the variable timing and the variable lift of a planar cam system, acting on a unique positioning lever, are discussed. The system, which the present authors believe to be novel, is suitable for automotive applications where variable timing and variable displacement of the distribution valves have a positive influence on the overall engine performance. After a general description of the mechanism's kinematic structure and its working principles, the kinematic synthesis algorithm is proposed and a multi-body simulation to investigate the dynamic behaviour is discussed.
