Abstract
The influence of interfacial friction on the contact between a pin and an almost conforming hole is considered. The technique is developed from the fundamental two-dimensional solution for a line force in an infinite plane, using distributed strain nuclei to model both separation and slip. This provides a numerically efficient solution for the problem, and enables the local subsurface stress to be found which, in turn, governs the crack initiation environment.
