Abstract
This paper describes a fuzzy decision system which examines the tolerances and surface finish associated with each face of a component and determines the number and type of operations required. The types of operations considered are finishing, semi-finishing and roughing. Using a backward chaining approach, elementary finishing volumes are generated for each face and these elementary volumes are then suitably combined to form finishing/semi-finishing features. These features are glued to the component to give the intermediate shape of the workpiece and it is this workpiece that is used for recognizing the roughing features. An example is included to illustrate the methodology.
