Abstract
Bending moment and axial force interaction formulae are derived for a fully plastic section comprising up to three plate segments. They are utilized in a plastic mechanism analysis of a point-loaded beam with partial axial restraint. The destabilizing effect of a pre-compression stress is noted. The range of validity of the analysis is limited by material tearing at large strains, and so the manner in which the strain increases with lateral deflection, and its dependence on the beam geometry and the precise length over which the load is applied, are studied. Tests and finite element solutions are described, which show good agreement with the mechanism approach.
