Abstract
Photoelastic frozen-stress tests were carried out on two identical vessels, one subjected to pure bending, the other to axial tension simulating pressure end-load only. The arrays of holes were designed for maximum ‘eccentricity’.
The pressure end load causes stress variations of the type assumed in B.S. 1113:1958 calculations. The measured eccentricities from the bending test show that the eccentricity, which is ignored by the A.S.M.E. and I.S.O. codes, is real but not as great as predicted by B.S. 1113:1958. A proposed method of calculation gives the best agreement with the observed eccentricities but the B.S. method predicts the mean axial stresses well.
The usual method of averaging the diameters of adjacent unequal holes for stress calculations is satisfactory.
