The contact of a symmetrical, convex indenter having a large central radius of curvature, and smaller radii describing the edges, pressed into an elastic half plane is studied. It is first submitted to a normal load, later a tangential load is applied, and finally a global stress is applied to the semi-infinite medium. This type of indenter is used as the basis for a possible optimal contact design.
