Abstract
In the present research work, the development of thick barium ferrite films on alumina substrate synthesised by sol–gel processing has been investigated. XRD, SEM and EDX evaluated the structure and composition of the coatings. In order to investigate the crack formation mechanism, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to identify the heating rate of coated samples from room temperature to final sintering temperature. The sols were produced with different molar ratios of iron and barium nitrates in deionised water and ethylene glycol. The coating was subsequently introduced to the substrates. XRD results showed that the single phase M type barium ferrite coatings were produced at Fe/Ba molar ratios of 10·5 and 11·3. The results of SEM and EDX indicate that a uniform and crack free coating of barium ferrite with 15 μm thickness can be produced at above molar ratios with good deal of consistency.
