Abstract
Results of researches on titanium Ti6Al4V and Ti grade 2 alloys subjected to nitriding in temperature range of 650–850°C in ammonia gas under low pressure are presented in the present paper. Improved hardness and wear resistance of modified substrates were observed. Scanning electron microscope analysis revealed the redistribution of alloying elements in the matrix of treated substrates. Measurements of hydrogen content showed that this element intensively penetrated substrates treated in ammonia atmosphere, with no adverse effect in most cases. Nitriding of titanium substrates in ammonia under low pressure requires further investigations, but the results presented in the present paper seem promising.
