Effect of in situ reaction on microstructure of TIG welding SiC p /A356 with Ti as filler metal

Abstract

The effect of in situ reaction on the microstructure of welded joints of aluminium matrix composite SiC_p/A356 had been studied. It showed that during tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, with Ti as filler metal, the properties of welding pool, such as the high viscosity and poor flowability would be improved. As a result, the drawbacks in the TIG welding were prevented distinctly. The typical pernicious interfacial reaction microstructure Al₄C₃ could be restrained from the interface between aluminium matrix and reinforcement particles. At the same time, owing to in situ reinforcement effect of Ti, the newly formed phase TiC was distributed uniformly in the weld resulted in welding the composite successfully.
