Abstract
This conference, held on 11–12 April 2005 at the Institute of Materials, Mineral and Mining, was another in the informal series organised by the Instrumentation Subcommittee of the Steel Division. The subject matter was wide-ranging and a prime intention was to generate debate. Almost 40 delegates from four countries attended, including personnel from steel producing companies, two equipment suppliers and research institutes/universities. As well as 16 formal papers, there was an initial 'what do we want to know?' session, followed up by a final session for debate based around issues raised during the conference and some key questions.
