Abstract
The investigation described in this paper was conducted with the aim of determining electrochemical behaviour of CuAlNiSi alloy in a solution of sodium tetraborate (borax) at pH 10·0. In addition, the influence of benzotriazole (BTA) was investigated after various times of immersion of the alloy in BTA solutions. The investigation of the inhibitor concentration (8·4 × 10−4, 8·4 × 10−5, 8·4 × 10−6 and 8·4 × 10−7 mol dm−3 BTA in a 0·1 mol dm−3 sodium tetraborate solution) has led to the conclusion that BTA has an inhibiting effect up to a concentration of 8·4 × 10−6 mol dm−3 whereas a BTA concentration of 8·4 × 10−7 mol dm−3 has an activating effect. Based on a free energy of −38·7 kJ mol−1, it has been concluded that chemisorption has an important role in the interaction of benzotriazole and the surface of the investigated alloy. The study also analyses the effect of chloride ions on the corrosion of CuAlNiSi alloy in sodium tetraborate solutions in the presence or absence of BTA.
