Abstract
This paper presents information on landfill use in the mining industry of Western Australia, with a focus on common landfill problems and how these are managed. The purpose of this study is to increase awareness of waste management practices and highlight the need for cleaner production in the mining industry. Twenty-six mine sites across Western Australia were surveyed to ascertain their management practices in dealing with landfill waste. The results of this study indicate that refuse facilities are similar across all sites, are close to active mining areas and are part of a waste rock dump or a purpose built facility. The most significant landfill issues identified include windblown rubbish, feral animals and inappropriate use of facilities. Some opportunities for improvement in these areas are proposed.
