The first preliminary results of SITE, the joint Indian–American Satellite Instructional Television Experiment, which took place during 1975–1976 are reported here. Equipment reliability in Indian village was extremely high 90%, and the communities, often exposed to mass media for the first time, showed large gains in knowledge about health and hygiene, family planning and political awareness. Female audience were particularly attracted to the daily television programmes.
