Abstract
Annealing treatments given to high-speed steel before hardening have a profound influence on the austenite grain size after hardening. The different variables involved in this prehardening anneal nave been found to be of critical importance, and it has been possible to establish optimum conditions of grain refinement within a very narrow range. In the present investigation, a systematic study of the variables involved in the prehardening anneal is described, and the importance of their role discussed.
