The stress–strain curves of sheet steel and brass determined by uniaxial and balanced biaxial tensile tests after various amounts of predeformation werefound to deviate from those corresponding to monotonic loading. Hill's macroscopic theory of anisotropy cannot explain these anomalies which are of microstructural origin. The results indicate that the dependence of the stress-strain relationships on the loadingpath should be considered as a material property.
