The relationship between fatigue crack propagation rate per cycle da/dN and the variation in stress intensity ∆K has been studied for the material in and around a submerged arc weld in an austenitic stainless steel of Type 316L composition. The behaviour observed is correlated with the microstructure of the material, and with the fracture surfaces obtained.
