Hardness measurements were taken and electron photomicrographic observations made on commercial Duralumin machined under varying conditions of cutting speed and rake angle, which had also been subjected to different heat treatments. It was found that hardening occurred in deformed areas as a combination of work hardening and the precipitation of CuAl2 (θ′) phase. The latter effect was only easily identifiable in the chip region adjacent to the rake face.
