Abstract
The study of phase transitions and ordering processes in metals and alloys by thermopower measurements is suggested as an often more sensitive alternative to the ubiquitous resistivity method. An outline is given of the physical parameters that control the thermopower and details are included of a method, and the precautions necessary for its accurate measurement. The temperature-dependence and ordering kinetics of the alloys CuAu and AU3Cu are examined by this technique and new results are presented of equilibrium values of the thermopower for CuAu. Evidence is presented of short-range order existing in AU3Cu up to 250° C and of fine structure occurring in the ordering curve for this alloy.
