Abstract
The state of the global stainless steel industry is reviewed, covering its historical development, issues relating to raw materials supply, modern production technology, and applications. The sustained growth in demand for stainless steels is discussed in the context of the global industry, particularly the trend for consolidation among major manufacturers, driven by the need to remain cost competitive. Structural and logistical implications arising from consolidation are illustrated by an outline of the plant and materials flow changes achieved during the creation of Outokumpu Stainless. Finally, the major challenges facing the industry are considered.
