Abstract
Pewter plates from the wreck of Henry VIII's ship the ‘Mary Rose’, displayed in a museum, have begun to show signs of deterioration. Analysis of a tarnish film by scanning electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested the film is a sulphide, possibly originating from atmospheric pollutant gases.
