It has been demonstrated that pitting attack on aluminium brass condenser tubes, due to aggressive estuarine water, can be halted by adding to the cooling water suitable amounts of an oxidising agent without injection of ferrous sulphate. Acid cleaning and prepassivation with benzotriazole are followed by continuous control of the redox potential of the cooling water by addition of hypochlorite solution.
