Abstract
The pitting distribution observed in mild steel radiators removed from two full scale experimental central heating systems was found to be related to the plastic deformation of the steel. Higher deformation resulted in increased pitting. Electrochemical tests on mild steel samples deformed in tension showed little change of the critical pitting potential. The rate of decrease of the passive current at a constant potential was found, however, to be quantitatively related to the degree of deformation in tension, increased deformation producing afaster drop in current.
