Abstract
The influence of environmental conditions on the phenomena of localised corrosion of Al and Al alloys, in particular a series of Al-Cu alloys, has been studied using potentiodynamic, potentiostatic and galvanostatic polarisation, followed by inspection of the corroded specimens in the scanning electron microscope. It was shown that a solution of 0·5 M NaCl at pH 2 (by addition of HCl) is the one best suited to reveal the susceptibility of an Al alloy to localised corrosion.
