Abstract
The authors described measures taken by the G.L.C. to in vestigate and remedy corrosion problems occurring in council properties, such as schools, houses and flats (including high-rise flats), and outlined some cases of failures. The main problems are blockage, gassing, formation of sludge and perforation. Blockage may turn out to be caused by builders’ rubble. Pitting may occur if oxygen is present, but this is usually more evident in mixed metal systems. Pitting can also be caused by sulphate-reducing bacteria in those parts of a system where sludge may settle.
