Abstract
In laboratory accelerated weathering tests, ‘inertisation’ of rusty steel, i.e. conversion of soluble ferrous salts into stable insoluble salts, was investigated using a series of barium salts either in a pretreatment before painting or as additives to the paint. The best protection from further rusting and blistering of the paintfilm was achieved by pretreatment with solutions of barium hypophosphite, orthophosphate or metaborate. Of the additives tested, these three salts were the only ones to confer improved protection compared with the controls.
