The limitations of current ideas on the mechanism of the protection of substrates by paint films, particularly in the case of steel substrates, are reviewed. Illustrations of observed anomalies are given, and the limitations of accelerated corrosion tests are discussed. The importance of recently developed radioactive tracer techniques in the study of diffusion of ions through protective films is discussed and predictions are made of the results that will accrue by the extension of such techniques.
