Corrosion in the Gas Industry — the Contemporary Scene

Abstract

In traditional Gas Works, where coal is carbonised and coke is converted to water gas and producer gas and the mixed gases from these processes are washed, cleaned and purified, corrosion does not present a difficult problem. The corrosion can be readily detected, its causes are usually self evident, the deterioration process is slow and above all the results, although unsightly, are rarely very serious.
