Abstract
At the 1986 ACRES conference in Tucson, the transition task force recommended that a definition for “transition,” as it applies to rural areas and school districts, be developed. Information on definitions was gathered from a variety of sources.
This article summarizes selected definitions of transition that are currently in use. The definitions were then analyzed for characteristics which are generic to transition planning for handicapped youth. From the characteristics, eight key elements which should be considered in transition are presented. The article then discusses barriers to effective transition in rural areas, which should also be considered in formulating a rural definition of transition. A recommendation is included for the elements to be included in a rural definition that will make transition more effective and successful in rural areas.
