Abstract
The Myocardial Performance Index (MPI) is a relatively simple, noninvasive method of assessing ventricular function. Previous studies established normal and abnormal MPI values in adult populations and in normal pediatric populations. Values for pediatric heart transplant patient have not been reported. In this study, normal MPI values for pediatric heart transplant patients were recorded. These values were measured during routine echocardiograms. A sample population of 33 patients with a mean age of 4.9 years old was tested. These patients underwent heart biopsies to assess rejection status, and all patients were found to be free from rejection. The results of this study show that MPI values for pediatric heart transplant patients range from a low of 0.25 to a maximum of 1.3, with a mean value of 0.56 and a standard deviation of 0.06.
