During the last 5 years there has been a great increase in the use of carotid duplex sonography (CDS) for the evaluation of carotid disease. CDS is complementary to the other noninvasive tests. CDS is useful for following post endarterectomy patients and those with nonspecific symptoms. It is also useful in identifying minor as well as significant carotid artery disease. With rapid proliferation of the modality, caution must be exercised so that high standards of performance are maintained. A systematic approach to the examination must be taken for the best results.
