Abstract
Following multiple high-profile reports of news organizations releasing AI-generated news stories, this study reports on an audience survey that assessed whether news consumers trusted the news generated by AI and thought it was credible. Two types of news quality were assessed—that of thorough and accurate reporting in an AI-generated news story, as well as the overall availability of a diverse set of news opinions or perspectives. This study found that higher consumption of news and encountering AI-generated news corresponded with belief in better news stories but less diverse news as a result of AI. Thus, human-generated news was trusted and appeared more credible, the more people were concerned with the availability of diverse news in an AI-generated news context.
