Abstract
The relentless push for universal digitization driven by market forces mirrors historical patterns of spiritual and linguistic colonization. It is imperative to safeguard the right to exist beyond the dictates of top-down digitization efforts. Embracing diverse approaches to digitization, shaped by communities rather than imposed by nation-states or corporations, is essential for addressing the planetary crisis. This commentary argues that communities in the majority world should have the autonomy to determine their political, economic, technological, and cultural pathways, ensuring their right to self-determination. The argument is structured by first reflecting on the widespread processes of universal digitization and their historical context. It then addresses the imperative of community-led digitization, exploring various technological alternatives that are more inclusive and representative of local needs and values. Finally, it discusses the potential negative implications of not adopting these alternative technological models, including the perpetuation of inequalities, loss of cultural identity, and further environmental degradation. By advocating for a decentralized and community-focused approach to digitization, this commentary highlights the importance of preserving diversity and promoting sustainable development in the digital age.
