Presentation and Robotic-Assisted Resection of a Rare Mediastinal Mesothelial Cyst

Abstract

A mesothelial cyst is a rare, typically asymptomatic benign cyst arising from the pleura, pericardium, or peritoneum often requiring surgical excision. These cysts can be difficult to diagnose on imaging due to generalized appearance and are poorly represented in literature due to their rare occurrence, accounting for only 3% to 6% of mediastinal masses. Intrapericardial mesothelial cysts are the most common intrathoracic subtype and require close monitoring until they become symptomatic, at which point excision is required. We present the case of an asymptomatic patient with successful surgical removal of a rare extrapericardial mesothelial cyst using a robotic surgical technique.
