Abstract
A positive and strengths-based approach is needed to highlight and further promote health and human flourishing in marginalized populations. Researchers have forwarded large-scale models and interventions to counteract oppression and discrimination, but emerging research suggests that there are smaller, more integrated ways to boost protective factors and increase support for people with marginalized identities. Microaffirmation is a positive social action that has potential for prevention and health promotion. In this manuscript, we describe the current status of microaffirmation literature and describe a taxonomy for implementation across four levels. We discuss potential limitations as well as hopes and benefits to society.
