Abstract
This exercise, designed for undergraduates learning about negotiations for the first time, asks students to plan a negotiation strategy for both sides in the negotiation between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and the British royal family concerning the Sussexes’ desired new roles in the family organization. Students will analyze planning and strategy negotiation components of both sides, develop strategies to approach the negotiation, and identify obstacles to agreement and strategies to overcome them. This will reinforce learning and application of key elements of a negotiation, integrative agreements, obstacles to agreement, and strategies to overcome an impasse. Given the extensive press coverage of this situation, this exercise demonstrates how course concepts apply to situations outside the workplace, using an internationally relevant example.
