Abstract
This perspective briefly traces the history and development of Lucknow city during different periods from the nawabi period to the British rule and since independence. It looks at its morphology and economic base. The problems of increasing congestion, pollution and stress on urban infrastructure due to rapid increase of problems are briefly discussed. The perspective laments the impact of all these changes on the distinct culture for which Lucknow has been known in the past. The city is rapidly losing its old world charm and traditional style of living and acquiring the mannerism and looks of a modern metropolitan city.
