For this article, ethical approval information was collected but omitted from publication. The authors declared the following:
The research included interviews, for which informed consent was given in all cases. The research also included participant observation (the author participating in singing and drumming events), which—together with the interviews—adhered to rigorous research ethics vetting and review. The most recent research (2012-2016) was conducted in accordance with the ethics guidelines of the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity. From 1997-2008, participant observation and one of the interviews whose materials are used here was conducted after passing a relevant ethics review at York University in Toronto, Canada. Permission was re-confirmed for use of the interview towards publication, in 2016. From 2009-2011, participant observation in the context of postdoctoral research was conducted in the context of the author's teaching community service learning classes at the University of British Columbia in Canada, where the author was an employee (postdoctoral fellow). The research and classes passed and adhered to formal ethics reviews of the UBC Office of Research Ethics for the academic years of 2009-2010 and 2010-2011.
