Abstract
The survival of franchising networks is explored in this article through the lens of population ecology, using survival analysis. Based on a study of 912 franchising networks operating in France at any time during the period 1992–2002, and involving 4,337 observations, it concludes that only one third of the networks survived over ten years. Survival chances were increased for networks having both company-owned and franchised units, having a large number of units, originating from the country under study, and existing in foreign countries.
