Unclassified white matter disorders are not rare. Several years ago, an MRI pattern recognition program was developed as a diagnostic aid in white matter disorders. The program was based on the MRI findings in classified white matter disorders. In the present article it is shown that the program can also be applied to unclassified white matter disorders and that application of the program can be of help in the definition of new disease entities. In addition, it is shown that MR spectroscopy can contribute to the definition of new disease entities.
