Fish stocks have been depleting, due to the reasonable desire of nations and individuals to maximize their self-interest, which brings about overfishing. This problem, popularly known as the “tragedy of the commons,” is described here in detail, and several solutions are offered, including new regulations, Individual Transferable Quotas (ITQs), that is, permits to harvest fish, and privatization of ocean regions. The authors support this third option.
