Fluid resuscitation and management are integral to critical care. Management strategies for common conditions in the intensive care unit are often in conflict. Evidence supports a goal-directed approach to fluid administration, and a number of goals have been evaluated. Concepts and evidence related to hemodynamic and metabolic goals are reviewed.
