Abstract
This study aims to identify the viewpoints of adult learners in an online graduate program in Human Resource Development (HRD) based on their assessment of how program elements have benefited their careers. Thirty-seven capstone students in a university’s graduate HRD program ranked 28 statements about aspects of the program, from “has most contributed to your career” to “most has not contributed to your career.” Using Q methodology, which relies on a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis, this study delves into these adult learners’ perspectives on the HRD program. Data analysis revealed four different factors, with one factor split. A holistic interpretation of the four factors revealed divergent viewpoints of these adult learners. The Well-Rounded Strategist values developing leadership skills, while the Applied Researcher values the real-world assignments that are integral to the program. The Data-Driven Strategist values how the program develops data-analytic skills to drive decision-making and lead change. This factor was split with the Basic Skills-Networker. This person values working collaboratively to develop skills that will enable them to stand out as an exemplary employee. Finally, the People Leader focuses on elements of the HRD program that develop the ability to understand diverse viewpoints and build a positive work culture. The findings can be used to help the HRD program optimize the curriculum, ensuring that the diverse needs of student stakeholders are addressed. Additionally, the study demonstrates how a unique approach can be applied in an online environment to gain an understanding of learners’ diverse perspectives.
