Abstract
This reflective piece takes a holistic approach to an older patient having a transurethral resection of the prostate, commonly known as a TURP. It concentrates on the effects of age and likely co-morbidities, and how the care given at each stage – preoperatively, anaesthetically, surgically and postoperatively – by the perioperative team can help to optimise the outcome for the patient. The article offers a critical appraisal of the best evidence available which supports the development of evidence based practitioners.
