The effect of planned education given to mothers of children with hydrocephalus on care burden and anxiety: a randomised controlled study

Abstract

Background:

Mothers of children with hydrocephalus often face increased caregiver burden and anxiety due to shunt-related complications, These challenges may be exacerbated without adequate training in their child’s chronic disease care.

Aim:

This study evaluated the impact of an educational programme for mothers of children with hydrocephalus on caregiving burden and anxiety.

Methods:

A two-group, single-centre, randomised controlled trial was conducted with mothers of children aged 0–1. The intervention group received structured education beginning preoperatively, based on a comprehensive training booklet covering shunt care, infection prevention, feeding, mobility, medication administration and hygiene. The control group received only routine nursing care during the perioperative period. Data were collected at baseline, post-intervention, and follow-up using the Personal Information Form, Zarit Caregiver Burden Scale (ZCBS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S, STAI-T) and a Child Follow-up Form.

Results:

Both groups showed mild caregiver burden and moderate anxiety. A positive correlation was found between ZCBS and STAI-S scores. Mothers in the control group faced more caregiving challenges, and their children had significantly higher rates of shunt infections.

Conclusion:

Structured educational programmes help reduce complications and improve caregiver outcomes. Educating mothers on shunt care lowers caregiver burden and anxiety, highlighting the value of early parental education.
