This paper outlines a range of issues that currently affect nursing research in Europe with particular reference to the UK. An argument is made that nursing research needs to align itself with policy imperatives while at the same time ensuring that nursing research remains visible. The difficulty of moving between clinical and research career pathways is highlighted along with a range of problems that are seen to influence the conduct of nursing research across Europe.
